UL1561 Certified 480V/415V Transformers Well Received in North America
MUNI POWER recently announced that its self-developed 480V to 415V industrial dry-type transformer has officially obtained UL1561 standard certification in the United States, and has been delivered in batches to a large data center infrastructure supplier in Ontario, Canada.
This order includes 12 customized transformers with a rated capacity of 2500kVA. All units completed factory inspection and third-party witness tests in the second quarter of 2024, marking a substantial breakthrough in MUNI POWER’s technical adaptation capability in the field of high-reliability power conversion equipment across North America.
UL1561 is the core safety standard for low-voltage dry-type distribution transformers in the US, covering 37 mandatory indicators including temperature rise limits, short-circuit withstand capability, insulation system durability, fire resistance and energy efficiency labeling. Different from common UL 506 and CSA C88 standards, UL1561 strictly stipulates that the winding hot-spot temperature shall not exceed 115K at continuous full load (ambient temperature: 40°C), and products must pass the short-circuit thermal stability test with 130% rated current lasting for 5 minutes.
In the past three years, fewer than seven domestic manufacturers have obtained full certification for export-oriented 480V/415V transformers complying with this standard, among which only three enterprises have mass production capacity for single units above 2000kVA, and MUNI POWER is on the list.
The certified product is far more than a simple voltage adapter, but an in-depth optimized engineering solution tailored to the actual operating characteristics of North American power grids.
480V delta connection is widely adopted in North American industrial power systems, while terminal loads such as PLC cabinets, servo drives and HVAC control systems are mostly designed for 415V star input. Traditional solutions adopt two-stage step-down or external voltage regulation modules, resulting in a system efficiency drop of 1.8%-2.3% and easy excess of THDv beyond IEEE519-2022 limits.
Adopting three-limb iron core and segmented copper foil winding structure, and integrating dynamic impedance matching units on the 415V side, the transformer achieves a full-load efficiency of 98.42% in actual measurement, with THDv controlled within 2.1%, 0.6 percentage points lower than the industry average. All test data have been verified in the test report issued by CanmetENERGY.
The company’s Technical Director stated: "We abandon universal standard molds and customize winding tension curves for each 480V/415V transformer, because the 0.3% voltage regulation tolerance required by North American customers is close to the magnetostriction limit of cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel materials."
Such pursuit of technical limits ensures stable output voltage within ±0.15% whether starting up at -30°C extreme cold in winter or operating continuously under 45°C high temperature in data center rooms in summer in Ontario.
Meanwhile, this transformer meets dual configuration requirements of Type I (IP00 open structure) and Type II (IP23 enclosed protection) specified in NEMA TR 1-2020 standard. Customers can select optimal heat dissipation solutions according to installation environments: open-type structure is applied in ISO Class 8 clean data center rooms for higher heat dissipation efficiency, while dust-proof enclosures can be equipped for mining substations with PM10 dust concentration over 150μg/m³.
The modular design enables a single product platform to cover full-scenario applications ranging from light-load office buildings to heavy-duty industrial production lines, greatly reducing customers’ spare parts management costs.

The overseas market is highly pragmatic. North American clients never pay extra for the label of "Made in China", but only recognize verifiable engineering value. A single transformer running steadily for 18 consecutive months in an automobile factory in Ohio can generate repeat orders equivalent to 30 conventional export models.
The UL1561 certification not only grants market access qualifications, but also establishes a standardized technical service mode. Based on local power grid characteristics, the company builds market trust via high-quality materials and precise craftsmanship. For Chinese manufacturers planning to expand production capacity in North America, this 480V/415V transformer serves as a benchmark for cross-border technical collaboration.
At present, small-batch customized service for MUNI POWER 480V to 415V UL1561 certified transformers is officially available. All orders follow the type test traceability mechanism specified in Clause 7.3 of IEC 60076-11:2022. Each unit is equipped with an exclusive digital twin file, including 3D electromagnetic field simulation models, measured copper loss & iron loss spectra and accelerated aging test data.
Clients can check on-site production footage and factory test videos in real time through encrypted access channels. Transparent whole-process manufacturing has become a new standard to build technical credibility and reshape the value evaluation system of exported power equipment.
